The predecessor of Soongsil University was the school founded by W.M. Baird, a missionary of the North American Presbyterian Church in October 1897. The school building was moved to Pyongyang in 1901, and the name of the school was named Soongsil School. It was upgraded to Soongsil University in 1905 and became the first university in Korea. However, due to the suppression of Japanese colonialism at that time, it was reorganized into Sooshi College in 1925.
